Over 20 business, technology, and academic leaders from Alabama are in Israel this week to promote their state and develop business relationships for their companies. Led by Speaker of the House of Representatives and utility company executive Seth Hammett and Neal Wade (Alabama Development Office), the group includes a high level delegation from Life Sciences, Aerospace, and Defense sectors from throughout the state.
The trade mission is being coordinated by the American-Israel Chamber of Commerce, SE Region with sponsorship support of the Birmingham Jewish Federation. Jim Tolbert (Education Futures Group) of Birmingham, chairman of the Federation’s Israel World Jewry Bureau, is the business leader of the delegation. AICC President Tom Glaser and Israel Director Ilan Friedman are representing the Chamber and handling mission details including all business meetings. Consul General Shmuel Ben-Shmuel personally coordinated the governmental meetings for the group.
Special highlights include briefings by the Israel Export & International Cooperation Institute; meetings with companies in Rosh Ha’ayin (Birmingham’s sister city) hosted by Partner; a Life Sciences dinner hosted by the University of Alabama at Birmingham; visits to Israel Aircraft Industries, Elbit, Rafael, Iscar, and Arad Textile; and meetings with Ben Gurion University and the Maayan incubator in Beersheva.
UAB is represented by top administrators from their acclaimed medical center including Dr. Eli Capilouto, Dr. David Warnock, and Dr. Dick Marchase who are joined by entrepreneur-in-residence David Anthony, Angela Wier (EDPA) and Roger Wehner (Alabama Power) to promote clinical relationships with more than 20 Israeli medical device and biotech companies. Technology transfer relationships are also being pursued by the Daniel Daly (University of Alabama) and Catherine Elliott (Aetos Technologies).
Other participants include Craig Whitlock and Howell Lee (Sparta, Inc.); Luther Strange (Bradley, Arrant); Steven Brickman and Lenora Pate (Sirote & Permutt); Gadi Shapira (Guest Associates); Alfred Seawright (Medical Place); Al Patterson (Navigator); Clyde McPherson (JMK); Gadi BenMark (Intergraph); Raymond Thompson (Vista Engineering); and Sanjay Singh (CTS).
